Hiccup and Astrid (HTTYD2 Concept) by Crownflame Hiccup and Astrid (HTTYD2 Concept) by Crownflame
Ugh, the coloring.

Well, this is probably the biggest thing of consequence I've done for a while, so I figured I'd pop back in and say hello to you guys.

(I really haven't been very present here lately, and for that I apologize; school has made me scatterbrained, and for the most part, Tumblr is like, all I can comprehend anymore. If you really want to be up on all my doodles and stuff, I actually post sketches and things quite regularly at [link] )

I HATE THE COLORING
And the base drawing is kinda meh.

Apparently HTTYD 2 is going to take place 5 years later, and the teens all get some costume tweaks. [link] [link]

This idea... baffles me hardcore. Like. WHY.

So in an attempt to figure it out, I drew them. It was kinda fun, I guess.

Hahahaha! Thanks! It's very out of date by now (this was based on some very early concept sketches by one of the board artists) but I still like it. :)

I personally thought the leaked images were really really ugly, aside from the outfits. LOL Not sure what needed fixing about Hiccup's design; I mean, it's not really his job to be traditionally hot. But whatever. LOL

I really like this picture. And I kind of like the new outfits. Astrid's hasn't really changed much, she just lost the pauldrons and put on something furry. Hiccup on the other hand belongs in armour. And since there is no way he'd be able to move in full Viking gear his leather stuff is perfect for him. Though I'm trying to figure out what those button looking things are for and the only thing I can think of is to hang sheaths from. Maybe he has a couple of daggers he can get at while on Toothless.

these are based on some really really preliminary sketches, so most likely they'll look pretty different in the final. But yeah, have no idea what's up with Hiccup. I mean, so long as there's a good reason for the change I'm okay with it, but whaaaaat is the reason? LOL

Apart from being at war with the Outcasts? Or maybe the Berserkers? They're good enough reasons for me to wear armour. Or maybe Hiccup wanted to be more impressive as the heir to the tribe.

War is such a simplistic plot route (which the books didn't really take, at least full-out), but you're probably right.

Perhaps, if the reasons for it aren't fleshed out. Sometimes wars in fiction get really complex. But then, they happen often enough in human history over the stupidest things that they make more sense in fiction.

But Toothless has fire! And he has minute enough control of it that he's used it safely on people several times in the show. LOL

because sometimes lighting things on fire and blowing things up isnt the answer. Same with mauling things with claws and teeth.

tuffnut & ruffnnut: WHAAAAT?

Look at hunting for example. it would be a waste of fur to burn it. and plus, toothless can only attack so many targets at once.

^^Because HTTYD is the most historically accurate thing in all of the earth!

IT COULD'VE BEEN BEAUTIFULLER.

I just hope they don't settle on the orange. And skulls. On Hiccup. Really? I hope he's just being hipster and ironic.

YES HTTYD IS 100 HISTORICALLY ACCURATE. THAT WAY IT CAN BE AS HARDCORE AND EMO AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE

"Why", I think gives us a clue to the long-term direction of the arc. It's all going to be about growing up (yes, that trope again). We saw them as 11- or 12-year-old heroes in HTTYD. 'Dragons - Riders of Berk' will show us their growing up over two to three years, facing the social changes they have wrought as well as confronting Alvin and his boys and also any other external or internal threats. HTTYD2 will thus show us the end result of all the growing from the TV show.

What, therefore, your picture here shows is what 15 or 16-year-old Hiccup and Astrid will look like. They aren't wild kids anymore; they're warriors of their tribe who have seen battle and have known loss and triumph. In terms of Viking culture, they're adults and are going to be living adult lives with adult responsibilities. Stoic is doubtless now teaching Hiccup how to be a chief. Astrid, if her relationship with Hiccup has lasted, could probably confidently expect to be married to him the next summer and kids would inevitably follow soon after that.

They're very different now and deserve a new look.

I'm pretty sure that HTTYD isn't concerned with historical accuracy whatsoever.

And the books managed to do a REALLY decent "growing up" plot without a huge 5 year skip (like... I doubt the movie can top what the books have done). All with Hiccup about 11-13. I guess the movie makers just think it'll be more epic/relateable to audiences if everyone gets a lot older, and I guess they'll make it work, but the concept alone makes me nervous. I don't think BEING OMG HARDCORE is what the series is or was ever about, so this is surprising to me. I mean, don't get me wrong, I have faith in the people working on the sequel. But on paper it freaks me the heck out.

I think that "Dragons: Riders of Berk" is meant to bridge the gap between the two movies, so I think we'll see accelerated development, maybe even an 'intermediate' form of the main characters in Season 2 so that we're ready for how they are presented in the second movie.

So they are going to disregard viking culture then? Because if their skipping five years there is a continuity error in there, firstly Hiccup and Astrid would be married by then (average age is 16), secondly she would no longer be able to wear that headband, to put it plainly its a virginity headband.

Really cool drawing though i like it, the coloring is fine.

...I'm pretty sure historical accuracy was never a concern in HTTYD. The author of the original books LITERALLY put a disclaimer in every book saying "Any relationship to any historical fact whatsoever is entirely coincidental."

Plus Vikings didn't wear horned helmets. Or have dragons for that matter. So... Don't think IRL Viking culture has anything to do with HTTYD.

Thanks!

FWIW, I wouldn't be surprised if the Hiccup/Astrid marriage will either be the climax of HTTYD 2 or will be the running theme of the first post-movie season of 'Dragons - Riders of Berk'. You know, everything from the proposal to the big day with all the hillarity of this bunch of misfits trying to do anything serious... and failing.

I think the coloring looks beautiful! -('0')-
And yeah, you totally captured their New look.
ARRRRGH!!! I understand that they will eventually become adults in the third film...but I really, REALLY hope they are cautious with the looks and personalities. And, also...why does Toothless have to CHANGE! Isn't he an adult dragon already?...or are they turning him onto an elder? Better not change much in him!
But I'm happy as long as it is as magnificent, perplexing, and heartwarming as the original breathtaking httyd. I suspect they are working really hard on this sequel, and 4 years is a good amount of time, the first also got 4 yrs. They began working on it on 2006 I presume.
Sorry for the long comment- mostly on the sequel XD- I really LOVE how you did all of your image. A favorite from me :D
